Review of Still Alice (2014) by James S — 15 Jan 2016
'Still Alice' takes viewers on an emotional roller coaster, following the life of Alice, a middle aged lady who unfortunately discovers she has early onset Alzheimer's disease. An interesting concept, and one that I think has been useful in opening the public's eyes as to the disease itself. It feels as though the presence of Alzheimer's disease has gradually been increasing in recent years, whilst never truly being considered a threatening illness, but rather just the case of memory loss. This is is simply not true, and it is important that it is viewed as a serious illness and efforts put into both assisting those with the disease, and most importantly working on remedies for the future.
'Still Alice' does a great job of depicting Alice's struggles and how her life is quickly altered. Scenes are undoubtedly powerful and emotional, with Julianne Moore portraying the lead character quite brilliantly. Whether or not the film is overall enjoyable, it certainly delivers what it intended - a powerful, eye-opening drama with great performances all round.
