Review of Steamboy (2004) by Stuart R — 14 May 2006
I've not a big fan of anime made for childen or dubbed anime. But it appears steamboy was made in the english language though slightly over dramatic, but nonetheless superb acting, similar style to the old dogtania film! A very sophisticated anime with intrigate details and excellant colour tinting.
It is clear why steamboy took 10 years and was so expensive to make (the most expensive anime ever!!) Full of some great suspense moments and images which are perfectly orchestrated to the music. Though it does feel somewhat more westernised than most and much lighter in tone and design, it is clearly a great piece of art.
However if the claim that this film is going to revolutionise anime is true, then I can see I have a very disappointing future ahead of me. As the film develops though it does lead into a darker style unlike the recent Howl's moving castle.
