Review of Steamboy (2004) by Alex S — 15 Jan 2009
Obviously this has some of the most stunning animation of all time, but a pretty face does not necessarily a good movie make. Unfortunately, most of the phenomenal animation skills the Steamboy team has is wasted on animating big iron construction shooting out steam after big iron construction shooting out steam.
Most of the action sequences involve an assembly of the characters turning valves while steam shoots out of everywhere and gears and cogs fly off of machinery. It's all very pretty yes, but it gets very old.
The climax lasts for near 45 minutes, and regardless of how beautiful this machinery may be, it does get old watching things fall apart and explode for 45 minutes straight. That aside, the story is decent, and parts of the battle at the Worlds Fair are entirely entertaining.
The movie just lags on for far too long with far too little variety. Worth watching once maybe, if you're into this sorta thing. I just wish the action wasn't so damn drawn out and repetitive.
