Review of Steamboy (2004) by Steve W — 11 Oct 2015
Otomo's other film, is Steamboy, a steampunk lover's wet dream. It tells the story of three generations of the Steam family, the youngest is a brilliant idealist, the father is a Darth Vader like megalomaniac, and the grandfather is the one who loves science but hates to see it used for war.
The result is an incredibly ambitious and visionary piece of work, even though its not completely perfect. The movie shines with incredible action set pieces, like the train chase, the flying duel, and the fight inside the Steam Tower, but the movie is very preachy and more visually dazzling than cerebral.
It took years of hard labour to make it happen, but Steamboy is a visual treat if it doesn't accomplish much of anything else.
