Review of Stealing Harvard (2002) by Jeff G — 12 Mar 2009
This film proves one thing to me Kevin Smith seems to be the only director who seems to know how to use Jason Lee the right way maybe also Cameron Crowe. In there movies he not only comes off as funny but also charismatic and insightful with range a perfect leading man. In films like these he comes off as so bland and looks like he is constipated as he tries to squeeze anything out of bad jokes.
This film has itâ??s moments and a good cast but instead of jokes the movie has a lot of characters with quirks who find themselves in continuously strange situations like the guy who likes to dress up intruders as girls and spoon with them, but isnâ??t gay. Or the fiancé who always cries during sex and her father who treats her more like a girlfriend then his daughter. There is also the leads sister a woman with a heart of gold who is man and sex crazy. Describing these characters makes the movie sound more interesting then it is. If it werenâ??t for the lame story about a man who promised his niece when she went to college he would pay for it expecting her to get into a community college but she ends up getting accepted to Harvard. So he and his con man buddy try all sorts of schemes to raise the money.
The Cast is so good. Itâ??s a all star cast. It would have been more interesting to follow there characters around for the movie. Then the actual story. Itâ??s not a horrible film as much as it is bad and sketchy. Owen Wilson was originally set to play Tom Greenâ??s role which may have actually helped the box office more at the time.
Wait for it to come on TV if you must watch it.
