Review of Stealing Harvard (2002) by Alan C — 21 Oct 2009
Despite boasting the comic talents of the king of gross-out comedy Tom Green and Jason Lee of Kevin Smith fame, Stealing Harvard failed to deliver any real hardcore laughs. Writer Peter Tolan presents a good story about a man whose promise to his niece to pay for her college threatens his engagement to Elaine, a rich daddy?s girl, and he must resort to robbery to come up with the money.
Director Bruce McCulloch, who steps up from his previous duds Dog Park and Superstar moves the film at a nice pace until it comes to a screeching halt to allow for some crazy (and often unnecessary) antics with either Green, Elaine?s crazy father (Dennis Farina), or a man who likes to cuddle with men whom he has dressed up like his dead wife.
Ultimately the film suffers from mixing every by-the-numbers comedy routine in the book with Green?s random and incoherent goofiness that grows tiresome quickly.
