Review of State of Grace (1990) by Michael C — 09 Oct 2010
For Fans Of: Irish Gangster flicks, Sean Penn, Gary Oldman.
Date Night: Nope.
Art Factor: Medium.
Fun Factor: Medium.
Emotional Factor: Low.
Intelligence Required: Low.
Essential Viewing: No.
In a genre mainly dominated by a certain ethnic group, it's refreshing to see an Irish take on an age old New York gang story. As you can imagine, the cast is as powerhouse as advertised. Yes, Oldman and Penn are the stars here, but Ed Harris is up to his usual so-good-I-go-unnoticed, Robin Wright shines as the sole female with an true part, and Burgess Meredith is a true hall of famer in his small part. The direction is subtle and very effective in that it lets the actors have room to breathe. If the gangster genre I your cup of tea or if you just really like great acting (hey, with some of the shit people like, ya gotta ask lol) State of Grace should be seen.
