Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Doug A — 05 Feb 2008
An ambitious grad student, callow and callous, pretty and manipulative, involves herself with a wounded and much older novelist.
She steals a photo of him as a young man -- and what a contrast it is with this parched and guarded old man.
Her persistence eventually blasts through his reserve (and his cliches).
But he's too sick and too old to face unhappy reality.
I felt sorry for this old fool then.
