Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Richard S — 29 Apr 2008
Ah. The film of the year for everyone who misses their lit thesis days. You can sit there and smile when the characters discuss close readings and deconstruction. It's a quiet film that's filled with strong moments, but for me, the subplots with Taylor detracted from the much more interesting interactions between Langella and Ambrose.
It isn't surprising that Langella gives what looks like an effortless performance. The rest of the cast does an admirable job, but each sounded strained from time to time. The music is also a bit of a distraction, but fortunately it was never enough to take me out of the movie.
It's definitely worth looking into if you ever considered being a part of its world, but it's not without its frustrations.
