Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Ben S — 08 Aug 2008
Lovely film. The wimp in me got squirmy every time Frank Langella and Lauren Ambrose get extra mushy together (dude, it's SKELETOR and Claire Fisher from SIX FEET UNDER! Forget May-December; this is January-December several years after), but otherwise their performances were heartfelt. Oddly enough the most memorable encounters for me are when one of them was acting their most pathetic.
I saw in it a cautionary tale of what happens when hero-worship clashes w/ reality and how love and relationships can turn on its head and treated as mutually exclusive (brother, I have BEEN there), because-- i'll say it again-- MEN SUCK AT SUBTEXT.
