Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by David M — 05 Sep 2009
What a magnificent film. This movie represents something that has been lost in film, or at least forgotten. Its not complicated, its simple, and intelligent. Life and death. An aging writer faces his own death, and has already faded into obscurity, when he meets a young student interested in his lifes work.
Frank Langella reminds us all what acting is all about. You don't have to be a scene stealer. Be over the top, or make sure that everything about a character is obvious. Every character in this movie is a real person, round and living.
They're not terribly interesting in and of themselves, but then who is? Its moving in the fact it raises our own mortality to our forefronts, and its both scary and enlightening as it does so. Well written script, and fundamental acting.
