Review of Starter for 10 (2006) by Michael B — 26 Jan 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I'm a tremendous sucker for the genre, unfortunately, and the 80's British college scene is as fun and unique a setting as there gets. Love the dichotomy between the two love interests. Love the realism to them. The situational realistic comedy is also perfectly bearable in terms of the awkward factor. An overly awkward character or scene can ruin a film for me, so loved that we feel plenty of anxst, but don't cringe ourselves into a bitter beer face. McAvoy is yet again a supremely likeable guys, the girls are gorgeous, and the supporting cast is solid.
The strength of the film comes in its celebration of the decade, both in how true it stays to the genre form, and with its hysterically enjoyable soundtrack featuring "The Cure." Couldn't stop smiling and laughing. Big fan. A huge pleasant surprise into my Top 10 for the year.
