Review of Starter for 10 (2006) by Su K — 18 Jan 2009
James McAvoy truly shines in this one. His spot on portrayal of a sensitive young man who hungers to rise above the socio-economic sector that he's been raised in supported by a touching love story, the stress of university life and the desire to prove himself worthy of a scholarship and his eventual fall from grace when he cheats in an academic competition, make for far more riveting watching than this movie might indicate at first glance.
Throw in the betrayal of his best friend, his love for a girl that truly doesn't appreciate him, while the one who does appreciate him goes largely ignored and his strained relationship with his mother and her new love interest, all set to a backdrop of life in the 1980's makes for a movie that most people who like a more intelligent bent to their movie viewing, will find most enjoyable.
