Review of Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012) by Delton C — 14 Dec 2013
SPOILER ALERT... SPOILER ALERT... SPOILER ALERT.
Troopers have better armor and weapons. Check. Soundtrack uses cues from the original movie to call back to it and set moods. Check. There's plenty of bugs, and they're nastier than ever. Check.
So what went wrong? CGI makes this movie more economical to produce, but it looks as though this particular CGI is rather half-hearted. The good stuff is indistinguishable from "real" live-action. Could they not afford a big enough render-farm, or were they just in a hurry to get it out under budget?
Though nudity and intimate scenes were part of the original series of movies, CGI rendering of these scenes is, well, somewhat off-putting. It's like trying to do a serious love scene with puppets.
Now, as for what's truly wrong: the writing of certain sequences in this picture is way off-base from any military standards that would apply. Of course that holds true for certain scenes in the original, so maybe it's not as bad as I think? Nah... it's that bad.
Carl Jenkins' character here is vastly different from how we've previously seen him. This mealy-mouthed, pusillanimous poltroon is not the Carl Jenkins I remember.
The character Hero looks and acts like he could have been Johnny Rico's little brother. Original characters are supposed to be original, for Pete's sake.
The movie is not totally unwatchable, but could have been a lot better. Maybe next time?
