Review of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008) by Trent R — 10 Aug 2008
Good to see Van Dien back as Rico, but he is not enough to save this weak film. First off, the CG is horrible, possibly the worst I've ever seen (especially the final battle scene) which amazes me because the bug CG from the original film 10 years ago is better than in this one.
How is that possible? I know they have less money for this, but 10 year old effects should be in the price range of a film like this. Aside from that the chracters make no sense as they seem to change from one scene to the next with a lot of awkward pauses in between which are supposed to create tension but only created confusion for me.
They went too far with the Federal Network stuff this time around as at times it felt like I was being hit over the head with the point the writer was trying to make when, in the original, I was able to laugh along with the filmmakers at their funny, thinly veiled satire.
I will say that this is much, much better than the second film of the series, but that is not saying much. I would've felt better about this if it was only the first sequel, but since it's the second sequel, I think they should give it up now before it gets even worse.
