Review of Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004) by Will G — 08 Dec 2007
As expected, this DTV follow-up to Paul Verhoeven's cheesy monster mash is thoroughly lousy. The budget reduction means there's not much in the way of messy bug blasting, so instead a bunch of troopers take shelter in an abandoned military outpost and come under attack from the plot of 'The Thing'.
Watch 'RoboCop' if you want to wash the taste of this movie out of your mouth and wonder why two geniuses from that cracker wound up slaving over this dreck: writer Ed Neumeier couldn't have spent more than a weekend bashing out the plot-free script, and stop motion supremo Phil Tippett turns in a directing job that's semi-competent at best.
The boring visuals were apparently achieved by filming through a pair of tights, while the score makes liberal use of the theme from 'Backdraft'. The non-descript cast barely registers, expect Brenda Strong, who's hilariously miscast as a foul-mouthed cigar-chomper, and fellow 'Desperate Housewives' regular Richard Burgi, who's not bad at all.
