Review of Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004) by Nathan H — 11 Jan 2010
"Starship Troopers" was a B-movie classic, a film in love with its own stupidity and corniness. To this day, I don't think there's been another military or science fiction film to so effectively parody war-time propaganda. Apparently, though, it performed below box office expectations, as evidenced by its sequel, a straight-to-DVD abomination.
Instead of intelligent wit, we have a film that strives to be a dark horror flick. Set on an alien planet. With giant alien bugs trying to penetrate a military outpost. And that doesn't really work well with such a pathetically paltry budget. The filmmakers try to avoid showing any images or sets that might cost actual cash to produce, so we rarely see any of the bright and creative "bug" effects from the first film. To compensate, the writers have conjured the same old plot from so many other low-budget science fiction and horror films...they focus exclusively on the humans, as the aliens have found a way to possess them. Think "Screamers," and "Jason Goes to Hell." Think: boring. Think: overdone.
Think: why did they need to ruin a potentially fun franchise by taking it in this dark direction?
