Review of Starship Troopers (1997) by Ashish T — 22 Oct 2013
Every time I re-watch this, I'm struck by how different it is from the substandard shooters that pass for sci-fi these days; there's a depth and subtlety of nuances here that's breathtaking, with more and more emerging with every watch. And all the while it's still a good action movie about shooting giant bugs.
It's about military fascism, brainwashing the public, social and institutional conditioning, class war, xenophobia and torture, media manipulation and manipulation by the media... these are such sensitive subjects in today's context, this movie could never have been made now. As it is, it's likely to make people very uncomfortable if they read too much into it; it was relevant in the aftermath of the Gulf War, the Korean war, and today.
It's a satire of war far more biting than Wag The Dog.
