Review of Starry Eyes (2014) by Ryan J — 17 Nov 2014
One interesting film, one you should all check out. Alex Essoe is awesome as Sarah, a struggling actress who just wants her big break, she surrounds herself with other struggling actors/film makers who all want the same success. When she gets a call up to audition for the leading role in an upcoming horror film called "The Silver Scream", they like what they see and call her back to meet the mysterious producer of the film, he gives her some ultimatums. It's what she has always wanted but will she do what it takes, will she be the one that gets her face on the billboards and her name up in lights? For that to happen she needs to be awakened, she needs to realise her potential, to do what it takes to be THAT girl.
A great leading performance by Essoe. The story is interesting, it's well shot, some pretty intense make up effects, a jazzy electro soundtrack that fits nicely. A good metaphor on the struggles in Hollywood, trying to make it in the film industry, doing whatever it takes. The only negative is that it could probably have been a bit cleaner in the final 15 minutes, it's a jarring tonal shift but it doesn't detract too much from what's happening. In the end it all works, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
