Review of Starry Eyes (2014) by Daniel S — 09 Dec 2018
I'm not a big horror guy. I don't horror often. But if I have to horror, I like a horror that doesn't horror the whole time. If it's blood and carnage and entrails from the start, I'll check out and not care.
I need to care about a character and the choices they make, so I like it when a horror film tells a story that I can get on board with, even if it features decisions made that I don't agree with.
This film all hinges around a single decision, and it's a decision that has nasty consequences. It made me squirm, it made me avert my eyes, it made me squint so I didn't have to see as much of the screen, but most importantly it made me care about what was happening.
Good performances, simple story told in a way that I imagine was relatively inexpensive to film but didn't seem cheap, and it utilized some really nasty bits of body horror with the sound effects to match.
Maybe went a little too far with the gore towards the end, but like I said, I'm not a horror guy, and my tolerance for this kind of stuff is far from robust. Also, I will always look favorably on a film with a chewy synth score.
