Review of Starman (1984) by Roy S — 20 Nov 2007
One gets the feeling that after The Thing was panned and ignored (largely) in the wake of E.T. that John Carpenter said "Fuck it, if they want a nicey, nicey spaceman movie, I'll give 'em one.
" But this is no E.T. Karen Allen plays a woman grieving her dead husband. Jeff Bridges is the alien presence that uses his DNA to clone the man in his efforts to rendezvous with his space ship. Now Karen Allen is on the lam, held hostage by her own dead husband.
This undercurrent of loss and sadness informs every scene in the film and makes this, in my mind, a minor classic.
