Review of Starman (1984) by Dave H — 08 Sep 2012
One of JC's most mainstream efforts, and certainly his sweetest. Pales next to E.T., and has multiple similarities/rip-offs, but also some welcome departures - for example Elliot and E.T. never got down and dirty in a freight train.
Starman is a combination of sci-fi, odd-couple road movie and romantic drama. E.T. meets Rainman meets Brief Encounter. Oddly, the later vibe works the best, courtesy of Allen's best perf ever (yes, including Raiders).
Bridges delivers another classic, unique perf - the man is beautiful. Sweet, simple movie, and I love the opening and closing shots (and associated music).
