Review of Starlet (2012) by David F — 13 May 2013
Starlet is a very raunchy movie, what I mean by raunchy is it gets very into the dirty smutty kind of situations. So be warned definitely not a family movie in any way. But strangely it is interesting enough that I decided to watch the whole movie.
Normally this kind of movie is not my thing at all but Starlet saved itself by creating such a strange yet interesting situation that I watched it. I would never recommend this movie to anyone, let that be known before you consider watching it.
Jane the main character is basically a porn star and lives with a friend and her friends boyfriend. The film is not filled with non-stop porn clips but there are some scenes that clearly could be removed altogether and no one will cry about it.
Jane and her live in friend are wayward and lost children in the sense of their lifestyles. Anyway, Jane is out shopping at a yard sale and an old woman sales her a thermos, Jane takes it home and plans to put flowers in it and quickly discovers nearly 10,000 dollars in it.
Jane happily spends a large sum in a shopping spree the next day or two and slowly Jane actually has some kind of a conscience. Jane feels kind of guilty for just taking the money and not telling the old woman so she tries to let the old woman know but not by outright telling her.
Jane tries to befriend the old woman (Sadie) over time, but Sadie is happy doing her daily routine and living life to herself. Jane has to be kind of pushy to break through Sadie's attitude to get her to even spend a few minutes with her.
It is very awkward at first but slowly Sadie lets Jane into her life a little. The movie is a bit slow but as a viewer I get the sense that Jane starts to feel a bit strange with the lifestyle she is living when spending more time with Sadie.
Jane eventually moves out from the friend and her boyfriend's apartment but just moves in with a few other girls that are in the same porn business. She is about to go to Paris with Sadie right after she makes this move but right before she does Sadie wants to take flowers to her husband's grave before they go to the airport.
For the sake of time Sadie asks Jane to take the flowers to Sadie's husband's gravestone. It's clear that when Jane sees the dates on the gravestone that she realizes how many years Sadie has been faithfully bringing flowers to the graves.
Sadie also had a daughter that also died many years earlier. However, this is where the movie ends. To me the ending was very weak and unsatisfying. I realize they wouldn't continue the movie in Paris as that would have been worse but perhaps they could have continued on after Paris quickly and the audience could have seen a large change in Jane's character.
Perhaps a change where she might realize the lifestyle she was living would eventually leave here desolate and she chose to change it and find a good decent man to marry and then left you with that more fulfilled ending.
Just leaving the audience at the gravestone was very inconclusive and unfulfilling. Terrible ending. 1 out 5 Stars.
