Sci-fi can be difficult to say the least. any undertaking is hard because you have to re-write reality in some way. Stargate tries to do that in a very big way and for the most part pulls it off. Granted there's a limit to how much can be told and shown in a 2 hour move, but Stargate makes the most of it's time.
Of course, it doesn't help when you have James Spader and Kurt Russell leading the cast.
