Review of Stargate (1994) by Jeffrey L — 11 Nov 2009
While I'm not a fan of the overly long-running TV series, the original theatrical movie is a favorite of mine in the sci-fi genre. It was made by Roland Emmerich before he got on his 'I Must destroy the world in every movie I make' kick and actually relies on character-driven moments, long stretches of nothing but dialog, and practical effects and action scenes with very little, if any, CGI outside of the effects for the Stargate device.
Sure, it can be boring when next to nothing happens for the majority of the middle of the movie, but the characters are written well-enough and acted well enough, that I don't mind because they're so fun to watch.
I would have much rather have seen a sequel to this movie then that TV series which yes, I've tried to get into numerous times and just never can manage to stick with it. As far as I'm concerned its an insult to a great movie.
