Review of Stargate (1994) by Robert — 24 May 2009
It seemed to me that there was quite a bit of thought that went into the story and the characters, but not all of that thought made it to the screen. For example, there was clearly a sub-plot about Kurt Russsll's character's personal issues with a recently deceased son, but it could have been explored a bit more deeply.
The historical and cultural ramifications of the chariots-of-the-gods premise were interesting, but could have been developed more. It's hard to put my finger on just what kept this from being a better movie.
Perhaps, in the end, it was that everything seemed too easy, given the scale and scope of the discoveries made by the characters. I would expect the characters to be more awe-struck by what they were experiencing.
Instead, it played out like a routine mission to a foreign country. The ideas were big, but the characters didn't seem to notice.
