Review of Stargate (1994) by Nick P — 01 Jul 2010
I've always felt Stargate was misunderstood by a lot of critics.
It's a very visual movie, packed with beautiful designs and memorable scenes/images - the gate powering up, the sweeping outdoor shot on the other side of the gate, pretty much every scene featuring the space ship, the fight between the pillars, the way the warriors' heads move, the bombers, Jaye Davidson's ridiculously awesome performance and lines as the villain... And that's before you get to all the character moments that make Stargate such a charming film, with Kurt Russell and James Spader doing a fine job at the uneasy, slow-build buddy relationship.
It's a hugely enjoyable movie, a sumptuous feast for the eyes that'll leave you feeling uplifted afterwards - do yourself a favour and watch it on the biggest screen available.
Most of the criticism I hear about Stargate is along the lines of 'the story is daft'. Isn't that kind of missing the point?
