Review of Starchaser: The Legend of Orin (1985) by Kurt N — 28 May 2009
I probably added half a star for nostalgia but credit were credit is due, I still found this film highly enjoyable 20 years later. I used to watch this film (along with Transformers) week in and week out when I was a child and thought I would try it out again and I was pleasantly surprised. The animation is good in a strange 80's way. I'd agree with most of the comments here, obviously it is quite derivative of star wars and some of the characters / scenes could just be taken straight from it but the film has a creepy dark atmosphere in places that I thought were pretty messed up even now, so god knows how I must have thought back then. The weird organ stealing 'mandroids' at the start who are fighting over who gets Orin's teeth and arms are a prime example.
I was worried that I'd watch it and hate it as with so many films I loved as a child but I could probably see myself watched it again and traumatising my own kids with it at some point in the future.
