Review of Star Wars (1977) by Wesley W — 09 Nov 2015
A classic in every way imaginable. This is the movie that transcended all other sci-fi films to come and movies in general. The original Star Wars boasts absolutely memorable characters, great dialogue, great acting, impressive special effects, a engaging and interesting story, and top notch directing from George Lucas.
This is the movie that basically launched the careers of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher and for good reason because they make for one of the best trios in movie history. They have great comedic banter between each other and you care to see them survive against the evil Empire.
Sir Alec Guinness as Ben Kenobi was literally brilliant here as well. When he is first introduced here, it is totally memorable and everything he says is interesting and with a few sentences of dialogue opens up the world that is Star Wars by explaining about the force and what had happened prior to the events of this film.
This film also introduces the best paring of two robots I have ever seen in a film in C-3PO and R2-D2. There exchanges back and forth are funny, interesting, and they had great chemistry. In Ben Kenobi's story, you get a real sense of conflict and history in the story and that is something a lot of films today fail to accomplish as well.
Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Obi-Wan Kenobi are out to save Princess Leia from the huge space station known as the Death Star and there biggest foe is the galactic empire run by Darth Vader and his army of Storm troopers.
What really draws you in this movie is the world building and the sense of adventure going on. This made up sci-fi world is interesting all the way through and it makes you wish you were a part of it.
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker totally embodies the type of main character you can get behind and relate to. You root for him throughout the whole movie and as it goes on, his character arc changes and he learns the ways of the force and slowly starts to become a Jedi.
Harrison Ford plays the cocky side character Han Solo perfectly and he flies one of the best spaceships ever in the Millennium Falcon. But by far the thing that also makes this film iconic is John Williams' score.
It is brilliant in every sense of the word. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it and it is one of the most incredible pieces of music ever composed and recorded. With all the problems making the movie, George Lucas had managed to create such a memorable movie and a movie that will always stand as a classic.
Even though I grew up on the Star Wars prequels, this still is miles and miles better than what most of the Star Wars prequels have given us. In the end, there is nothing bad I can name about the film and I love it to death and always will.
