As a dedicated Trekkie, it is fairly difficult for me to take this movie seriously, on the whole. The overall story is OK but it needs a LOT of tweaking. Getting to the galactic center in the space of a few hours with NO help whatsoever from technological upgrades or spatial anomalies? A lot of people I've spoken to have stated that they don't particularly like Sybok as a character.

I did, but I thought he should have been a bit more emotionally intense. He IS a Vulcan, afterall. They are extreme people, not much room for shades of grey. Ordinarily, I would have given this movie a somewhat lower rating, but the saving grace of the whole film is the concentration on the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic.

It has no greater advocate and showman than this film. Their scenes are some of the best in the entire franchise and, as far as I'm concerned, this is basically a film about THEM. It will also remain one of the great "What Ifs" of Trekdom, as the final product was not what Shatner had in mind.
