Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Onomatopoeia M — 17 Jun 2009
I admittedly don't know squat about the original Star Trek series, but I can say that I respect the idea of transplanting a 60s show into a thoughtful sci-fi epic, especially 2 years after the action-packed Star Wars.
Despite the fact that this incarnation rips off 2001 a bit too much and often moves way too slowly when it's trying to be meditative, Robert Wise provides excellent formal direction and the story is compelling, with a fun twist and decidedly ambiguous ending.
Maybe I'd be more apt to judge more harshly if I'd seen more of the show, but as it stands I was captivated by Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and my appetite is wetted for more Kirk and Co.
