Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Lloyd H — 17 Mar 2013
I wouldn't consider myself to be a die hard Trekie, but the original TV series and films where a massive part of my childhood that I'll cherish forever. However this first motion picture is absolutely awful. As a child watching this film, I was beyond bored for the entirety. With a staggering two and a quarter hours duration, the film is overlong and the pacing is painful. In my opinion this film failed to replicate what was so enjoyable about the series.
The characters are obviously brilliant and as loveable as ever, but the direction of the film, pacing issues and overall lack of fun make the motion picture a major disappointment. It leaned more towards 2001 with big budget visuals and drawn out moments of pondering. There are occasional moments of nostalgia, but overall Star Trek: The Motion Picture is boring, bland and in no way exciting or fun.
