Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Joey T — 30 Aug 2015
Oh here we go!! Most of you will be saying whenever you see the fact that I am reviewing the first Star Trek movie. Now first and foremost, I'm not a Trekkie, I've seen a handful of episodes of the original series and the next generation and I've seen two thirds of the first six movies and only one that involved the second crew; but this one as well as I would say one or two of the other ones that I've seen are really, really good.
Very cerebral, thought provoking, and asks a lot of really scary questions that humanity itself likes to ask from time to time. Revisiting this movie reminded me that modern day, contemporary audiences couldn't handle a movie this intentionally slow and methodical in revealing its twist.
But if a script with this type of subject matter made it would be done in a much more fast paced way. For example, there's one sequence where the U.S.S. Enterprise is entering the cloud of the antagonist to find the object at the center of this cloud and it takes roughly 20 minutes from when they first contact with the cloud till they get to the "brain" for anything else to really unfold.
That said the crew itself which includes Captain Kirk, Mr Spock, Dr. "Bones" McCoy, Mr. Scott, Mr. Sulu, Commander Uhura, and Mr. Checkov as well as all the other additions are welcome and they play off each other very well.
Fantastically written, if flat at times with expert directing from Robert Wise, and the effects, though some look very dated and you can tell that they're fake, can still marvel audiences to this day and got me actually excited to try and watch some more of the movies as well as the actual original TV series, all this being said I highly recommend this movie to fans of science fiction movies, movie viewers that can and more so like to think about the subject matter, and just as a movie in general I found it very entertaining and engaging.
Now on to Wrath of Kahn.
