This first Star Trek isn't bad, but it surely isn't great. The characters are what make this such a great universe and they are essentially pushed to the side in favor of 2001 style visuals and scifi pontificating.
The BIG problem here is the lingering...Wise created some pretty stunning visuals, but got a little obnoxious in showing us them. Nonetheless, the movie is oddly gorgeous and worth watching if you're a fan of seeing space in all its terrifying beauty.
