Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Sean L — 12 May 2009
I love this movie. I've always loved this movie. It was always my favorite when I was younger. The humor doesn't work quite as perfectly now, but I still enjoy it thoroughly. The humor works because it is believable and comes organically from the characters and story.
I love the story. I specifically like how the crew can be separated into small groups so everyone gets a moment or two to shine. I also really like the idea of the alien contact with the whales. That is a fascinating idea which I wish would be explored more in other adventures, but of course it wouldn't really fit.
On its own, this may be the most fun its possible to have in a Star Trek film. Again, there are things I have to forgive, but I find it easy, even when they watch video footage of the Enterprise blowing up which could not have been filmed.
Who was out in space with a camera? Or is it just like in Spaceballs when they watch a VHS of the movie they are in, or in this case the movie they are a sequel to. Doesn't , matter. I can overlook it.
