Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Brett K — 17 Jun 2009
Certainly not the most standard of Star Trek movies, this one has some of the most heart and humor in the Star Trek series. The theme of the movie is communication and understanding. The greatness of this movie is that we see the crew in a fish out of water situation, working out of their element.
The motivation of the crew is also very odd, but great, considering they are trying to save a world in which they are all criminals and will be punished once they save it. Again, nothing great in the directing department, it does a decent job considering the material.
The writing department is also a little lackluster as far as dialog in most of the movie, although it has it's moments. Some of the humor came off as a little cheesy and out of place in terms of a Star Trek film.
I still think that the depth was there though. I was entertained throughout the entire film, but I thought that the ending was a little weak. There is no real climax, and the falling action was a little poorly done.
It does a good job at showing the characters' changes, but Kirk got exactly what he wanted through misbehaving.
