Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Clay B — 19 Sep 2011
Star Trek IV The Voyage Home skips the sci-fi action for laughs and succeeds wildly. After the angst and melancholy of the previous two movies, this is a highly-entertaining conclusion to the Genesis Trilogy.
The story is really just a throwaway excuse to send the Enterprise crew back to modern day times. A space probe arrives near Earth searching for whales, which are completely extinct in the future. In order to prevent the probe from destroying the Earth, Kirk, Spock, and the crew travel back in time to bring a couple of whales to the future.
From there, it's a series of fish-out-of-water sequences (pun intended) involving each member of the crew as they struggle to fit into our modern world...the funniest of which involve the completely-out-of-his element Spock. The movie never takes itself too seriously, and the comedic timing of the cast is impressive.
By the end of the film, all of the loose ends from the previous movies are neatly tied up, and the future of this franchise looks bright indeed.
