Review of Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) by Eric N — 18 Jul 2016
The Batman V Superman of the franchise (though not that bad or divisive.).
One of the more mixed bags of the franchise along with the likes of Star Trek: Nemesis. Everyone will tell you it's competently made, but no one is gonna tell you this movie means much to them personally. It strayed just a little too far from "Star Trek" at times - sometimes by being too much of a tribute to the past - if that makes any sense! If you're a poser and jumped on board with the last movie, you might be a little left out this time with all the nods to the original series and The Wrath of Khan - which I find to be a little unwelcome to be honest - it should've stood on its own. That's the practically its only problem - it may not even be followable without having seen a movie from 30 years ago.
But it's still the best visuals on screen since The Avengers. Seems like the biggest budget movie of all time. However, it's not the Star Trek I know and love since it's almost completely about action action action fx fx fx. If it weren't for Peter Weller stealing every minute, I wouldn't have a lot of use for this movie. As grandiose and dazzling and hard-edged as it is, it leaves you feeling that same tired disappointed feeling you got from Man of Steel and Batman V Superman -- the cgi destruction porn has grown tiresome. Been there, done that. Tell a story.
