Review of Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) by ● Nate & — 13 May 2008
STAR TREK: INSURRECTION.
Star Trek: Insurrection(Details here), is the ninth of the prestigious franchise, featuring the star ship Enterprise, with Captain Jean-Luc Picard in charge. Following on from the series is a tall order, but they have successfully done so before.
On a primitive world, the android Commander Data(Brent Spiner), appears to have gone out of control, when Captain Picard(Patrick Stewart) begins to investigate, it reveals a dire plot involving the federation that violates the very core principles of their 'prime directive'.
The performances are very apt indeed, flawlessly portraying characters from the series, and the characters themselves remain the same, but feature some small development brought on by the situation in hand.
Directed by Jonathon Frakes, who also plays Commander Riker, there is a certain degree of class in this area. Using more than just the basic camera techniques and shot durations, the audience is exposed to something a little more interesting visually than what we were brought by the television series.
The narrative however, is the weak point of the story. It doesn't feel particularly important or expansive, more like an average episode rather than a major issue that would warrant the feature length running time. There is a mild twist in there, and nevertheless, it is a solid story, even if not hugely exciting.
Overall, Star Trek: Insurrection is a direct transition from television to film, more like a two part episode rather than a hugely cinematic experience. Although Jonathon Frakes' direction does add a little more class and inspiration to the production, the movie fails to be anything remarkable. Entertaining, just don't expect to be amazed.
