Review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) by Kevin G — 30 Apr 2009
It's kind of hard to follow up with another great Star Trek movie after how good Star Trek II was. This one really isn't that bad. Although this is the third movie made, this is the second one in the three movie series where each movie builds on each other. The story and plot is OK and the acting is so so. However there are a few things that bring this movie down.
The action takes a step back in this one and it's a good thing too because the Enterprise is in no condition for battle after the pounding it took against Khan in Star Trek II. Also a notable actress was replaced by someone else playing the same part in this film compared to the last one and I found it kind of distracting. It's too bad that happened but oh well.
But the part that really does distract you is seeing Christopher Lloyd playing a serious role as the Klingon captain. Sorry, that just doesn't work at all. I was laughing during his serious speaking parts even though they were no way funny. Back in 1984 it could have worked but then in 1985 Christopher Lloyd was in that very popular movie Back To The Future, a part he was famous for around the world because of all the comedy he did in that role. And it's because of that, is the reason why it's just hard to watch him in this film playing a Klingon captain that becomes Kirk's enemy. It just doesn't work.
Despite it's faults the movie is OK.
