Part two of a kind of unofficial trilogy, this doesn't break quite as much new ground as The Wrath of Khan - the blowing up of the Enterprise aside - as it's pretty clear from the outset how the film is going to end.
That said, it does still contain many of the ingredients that made the first two worth seeing.
