Review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) by Jason J — 13 May 2008
STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK.
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock(Details here), is the third film of the Star Trek franchise, and takes itself on as a direct sequel to the previous movie. Almost seeming as a response to the twist at the end of the last movie, it fails to meet those standards.
Spock's thought to be dead body lies on the new world "Genesis", however his 'soul' would appear to be trapped within a member of the enterprises crew. Admiral Kirk(William Shatner), defies all of the rules of Star Fleet in order to bring back Spock's body for his father on Vulcan.
The plotline is very weak overall, however the first half of the movie starts out nicely, using the magnitude of the last film to effect the characters to the point we see more of their personas. As the movie goes on, the story becomes too outlandish, even for the Star Trek series, which loses it some credibility.
The acting is great from the lead cast, as they represent the characters they spent so long creating with precision, as you'd expect. The new characters added into the film are quite poorly thought out, although Christopher Lloyd remains entertaining on screen, even though the writing is poor.
The direction from Leonard Nimoy is nothing spectacular, above average however, with some nice contrasting shots in the climax and some carefully thought out scenes early on.
In conclusion, there is not much to this film, it basically was made to rectify the end of the previous film, and although the first half is enjoyable, it does deteriorate throughout. One for fans, but not for most viewers.
