This is my personal favorite of the Star Trek films. They are not trying to save the Earth or the galaxy, but one of their own. It's a much more personal story. This is the only Trek movie in which I felt there was something really at stake.
The crew put their lives and careers on the line to save Spock and there are expensive, unrefundable costs. Also, I'm a sucker for a dark tone and a good cliffhanger ending. (Empire is my favorite Star Wars, too.
).
