Review of Star Trek: First Contact (1996) by Kenneth H — 25 Apr 2010
This is probably the most action-packed Star Trek movie I've ever seen! (aside from the 2009 film) We actually see starships firing their weapons - in some cases, more than once! That said, it had to sacrifice a lot of the moral themes that Star Trek movies usually put out, but we still see a discussion of pride, revenge, and sacrifice between Picard and Lily, and of destiny and legacy between Cochrane, Riker and La Forge. One nice thing about this movie is that it's condensed into three parallel storylines - the Enterprise crew's battle with the Borgs, Data's captivity with the Borgs, and Cochrane's historic flight into space - and it stays focused on each storyline for a decent amount of time before switching to another, rather than switching back and forth too quickly as so many movies do. And the Borg (this is my first time seeing them) make for a most fascinating and horrific enemy.
I was a little disappointed that we had to have yet another Star Trek movie involving time travel (after The Voyage Home and, to a lesser extent, Generations) as I think it's a little overdone by now. But at least the time traveling aspect wasn't as goofy and clichéd as it was in The Voyage Home.
All in all this is one of the better and more enjoyable Star Trek films.
