Review of Star Trek: First Contact (1996) by Tero H — 17 Oct 2012
A great Star Trek / scifi-movie, it has very cool special effects, well done acting and thrilling action. The film could have gotten even more out of the Borg, and it could have been even more thrilling, but it has so many positive things about it that I rated it 5 stars. The story is certainly well designed and interesting, it includes time-travel and cyborg creatures called "the Borg". Spiced with some literary quotes, as often seems to be the case with the Trek films, it has a philosophical side to it.
The film isn't too long and there is so much action in the film that it doesn't get boring or even slow-paced. The film's violence is masked so that even a younger generation of scifi fans may watch it. As I already mentioned, it had cool special effects, which are better than in any Trek movie before it. This is most apparent in the space battle scenes. The familiar Trek characters, the captain's anger toward the borg, and a lot of emphasis on the android Data and his aspiration to become more human, add their own emotional appeal to this movie. Quite enjoyable science fiction movie, even if one doesn't know anything about Star Trek. One of my three favorite Star Trek movies, Star Trek VIII - First Contact is science fiction entertainment at its best.
