Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Zachary L — 20 Jun 2018
Star trek has a tradition of having villians who are disillusioned with the Federation and by extension, with humanity, and deviate from what Star Trek understands as the human condition to rationalize their cause.
To this extent, Krall suits this archetype and makes him the ideal antagonist that Kirk must combat. However, the film would have been much better served exploring Krall's origin and ironing out his motivation as a villain, instead of treating those things as some sort of twist.
The film doesn't ever get better than the interaction between Kirk and Bones in the first act, reminiscing over a glass of whiskey. That is, unfortunately, the high point of the film. But at least character moments like that are allowed to exist.
