Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Amanda C — 25 Jan 2017
While a vast improvement over Into Darkness, there is still a feeling that more could have been done with the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise. Beyond is mostly well served by having Simon Pegg as a writer on the film, however, this also means that his Scotty gets to take a much more substantial role than he has in previous film's.
Unfortunately this is at the expense of other secondary characters, most notably Uhura and Sulu, which is unfortunate. This is evened out by the strong addition of Sofia Boutella's Jaylah, who provides the strongest moments of the film.
Idris Elba is also a great addition, as the strongest villain of the new trio of films, although it would be nice if the makeup artists hadn't decided to bury his face under layers of makeup. All in all, Star Trek Beyond is a fun couple hours at the cinema, unlike to annoy the anointed or alienate the uninitiated, but also unlikely to be a lasting classic.
