Review of Star Trek (2009) by Josh H — 11 Aug 2016
I must preface this by saying that I'm not a HUGE Star Trek fan ... my little brother is a bit of a Trekkie, but I'm more of what you would call a casual fan. I've seen all the movies, and for the most part I enjoy them.
But this one, I believe, blows away any Star Trek movie that has come before it, and even if you're not a fan, you could still enjoy it. But if you are a fan, it's going to be a thrill ride. I think the casting was nearly perfect, the story was interesting, it didn't feel like a season finale of the TV show (like some of the previous films have felt like) -- it was a major event.
All the best Star Trek movies have had more action than the ones that aren't as good, and this one, far and away, has more action, but balances it with drama and some pretty funny comedic moments.
Even if you're a huge nerd and you have complaints about JJ Abrams messing with the original story ... I can't imagine someone who adores the series not being able to look past that and enjoy the best Star Trek movie ever made.
I couldn't think of a better way to revive a dead franchise. Fantastic stuff. So much better than all the originals and it's not even close.
