Review of Stander (2003) by Neva M — 21 Dec 2007
It's a load of bollocks, as all biopics are, but if you're willing to get past the usual biopic idealizations and shorthand "humanizing", Stander is a fun crime film. Thomas Jane plays his confident police captain turned bank robber with panache .
Opening riot scene is a knockout. The biggest drag on this film is the wince-inducing series of glaring contrivances, the most idiotic involving the bank robbers hitting a bank twice in a day because of a radio news report.
Ending is pretty ridiculous as well (as well as grossly inaccurate...I looked it up). Great music, fun robberies, but if you're looking for the real Andre Stander or a movie that stands up to scrutiny, you'll be disappointed.
