Review of Standard Operating Procedure (2008) by Eoin H — 21 Jan 2009
Standard Operating Procedure is a beautifully photographed dispassionate documentary examining what Abu Ghraib suggests about America and indeed Americans.
Errol Morris brilliant interview technique allows the subjects to all reveal very credible statements about their time in Iraq. Anyone who has seen Morris' masterpiece Fog of War will be familiar with the engaged and enthused response Morris draws out from Robert McNamara. Here again the key players in the Abu Ghraib controversy nearly jump off the screen with fervid stories, once more brought to a boil by Morris' questioning.
While standing as a detailed document of a very dark period in American history, this film also interestingly ponders the power of the photograph.
